Google could be a tool to change the election results

By a simple modification of the algorithms of search results, Google could decide the next USA presidential election in 2016.
The most used search engine in the world is so powerful and the results of the national elections are so evenly matched, that even a small change in the notation of the secret code that the network giant uses for its searches (GOOGL, tech30) could tilt the presidential election of 2016, as stated by Robert Epstein, senior research psychologist at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology.
In an opinion article for the site Politico.com, Epstein said that he and a team of researchers studied the behavior of undecided voters who had been exposed to arranged search results. The experiment consisted in exposing that by showing search results with a more favorable trend towards a particular candidate, the researchers were able to change the opinion about that candidate.

The study showed that the change in the search engine drove the favorability of a candidate from 37% to 63% after leaving it active for a search session of about 15 minutes. Five randomized studies were made, involving 4,500 undecided voters in the United States and India.

A Google’s representative said the company's programming is designed to provide "appropriate responses" with impartial result in favor of one point of view over another "it would undermine the public confidence in our results and of course Google would be put into a trial.”

Epstein, after the clarifying response of the representative, said that Google's answer about the subject was "nonsense".
"How could not providing those pertinent answers to the questions related with the elections rule out the possibility of favoring one candidate over another in the search rankings?" Epstein wrote in his column. "Google's statement seems far from a general denial that they can always put their finger in the balance".

The research suggests that the election was possibly balanced in the latest test result; obviously, it says through the control of Google, given that President Obama won the 2012 election with only 3.9% difference and the electoral roll for 2016 overlooks a very close race.
Although Epstein has fallen short in saying that the Google platform can change the panorama of an election, he also implies that the company would not be alone in the matter if there were any manipulation.
As historical background, Epstein points out that in 1876, the company Western Union attempted to swing the presidential election towards their favorite candidate, Rutherford B. Hayes. The difference in the advantage of this election was the closest in US history. Western Union used its monopoly of the telegraph network and the transport exclusive contract with "The Associated Press" to put in print only positive stories about Hayes through cable. Hayes eventually won the election "by a hair".
On average, Google adjusts its algorithm more than once daily. Epstein said that it is possible that even if the triumvirate "Alfabet" of Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt did not command to directly tip the balance in elections, any astute employee could modify the code without the knowledge of the leaders.

"Google could easily be turning the results of elections around the world as a person is reading this," finally said Epstein.
